Overview

The GNWT is proposing to amend the Deh Cho Bridge Regulations as follows:

1. Remove previous amendments that were made to waive bridge tolls from March to October 2020.

This amendment removes section 3(1.1). This section waived bridge tolls from March to October of 2020, as a COVID-19 economic relief measure. That period being over, and the appeal period for tolls assessed during that time being expired, this subsection can now be removed.

2. Exempt two additional classes of vehicles from paying bridge tolls. This includes pick-up trucks with commercial licence plates that are used for personal transportation at the time of crossing, motorhomes and camper trailers.

The Deh Cho Bridge Regulations currently state that all vehicles with commercial plates weighing over 4,500 kg must pay a toll when traveling northbound across the Deh Cho Bridge.

Certain pick-up trucks weigh over 4,500 kg without carrying freight. As the intent was never to charge a toll for such vehicles when being used for personal use, Highway Patrol Officers currently don’t enforce tolls when they cross the bridge.

Amending the Deh Cho Bridge Regulations will correct the inconsistency between the regulations and practice.
