Trent University applied to deliver an Indigenous Environmental Studies and Sciences Diploma program within the Northwest Territories. This program was developed in partnership with the Yellowknives Dene First Nation and incorporates Dene ways of knowing and being, including course work involving Dene land use protocols, Dene land stewardship practices, and traditional Dene land navigation skills.
The Diploma will be offered jointly by the Trent University School of the Environment and Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies, with links to the Indigenous Environmental Studies/Sciences degree program within the Northwest Territories. They hoped to begin offering the program in Fall 2023.

In December 2022, the NWT’s first-ever Post-Secondary Education Act (Act) and Regulations came into effect. When post-secondary education institutions want to provide a new post-secondary education program in the NWT, they complete a System Coordination Review Application. The application is publicly posted by the GNWT for 15 business days to allow the public and NWT post-secondary education institutions to provide feedback that will be considered in the review process.

The Quality Assurance Review Advisory Committee reviewed the application along with any public input and made a recommendation to the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment as to whether the application may proceed.
In November 2023, the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment granted authorization for Trent University to deliver the Indigenous Environmental Studies and Sciences Diploma Program, pilot project in the Northwest Territories. This authorization is granted for the delivery of this diploma to one cohort in the NWT until July 31, 2026.
