Overview
The public was asked to provide feedback on plans to move towards a single regulatory framework for all nursing professionals in the Northwest Territories (NWT).
Background
- Currently, Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners apply to the Registered Nurses Association of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut to practice in the NWT, while Licensed Practical Nurses apply for licensing to the Department of Health and Social Services.
- Psychiatric Nurses are not required to be licensed in the NWT however employers often require them to be licensed in another jurisdiction.
- Having one body that regulates the practice of nursing for all nursing professionals in the NWT will streamline licensing and ensures all nurses have greater access to training and resources to perform their scope of work safely and collaboratively within the health system.
