The NWT Environmental Audit is an independent review to assess the effectiveness of the regulatory regime in the Mackenzie Valley, as well as the quality of environmental information and processes related to monitoring cumulative impacts.
Background
Four audits have been completed since 2005, most recently in 2020.
The reviews are designed to confirm how well our regulatory system is working and to provide recommendations to help guide decision-makers.
The Audit is an obligation of the Sahtu, Gwich'in and Tłı̨chǫ land claim agreements and a legislated requirement of the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act (MVRMA).
The video above is also available in the following languages languages:
The 2020 audit led to recommendations that should result in:
Traditional knowledge-based information being available and used respectfully to understand trends in water.
The GNWT ensuring that there is a network of water monitoring stations to address residents’ concerns and to describe what is happening in both rivers and lakes across the NWT.
The development of a way to collect and analyze water monitoring information so that data from industry, government, researchers and communities can be brought together to understand trends better.
NWT residents knowing how to find information about water monitoring results.
