The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking public feedback on proposed changes to the Education Staff Regulations under the Education Act.
The proposed amendments aim to strengthen processes related to teacher certification, information sharing, and professional oversight, while aligning with recent amendments to the Education Act.
These updates are intended to support student safety, improve consistency across jurisdictions, and modernize regulatory language and practices.
The proposed amendments would:
Allow the Registrar to share specific information with counterparts in other provinces and territories to support oversight of teacher certification.
Require disclosure and review of relevant information, including criminal record checks, when applying for teacher certification.
Introduce information‑sharing requirements when a teacher’s certification is suspended or cancelled, in alignment with a national protocol.
Establish requirements for teacher evaluations to align with GNWT standards and frameworks.
Update terminology to reflect current language standards, including replacing “Aboriginal” with “Indigenous” in the English version of the regulations.
Clarify equivalencies for Indigenous language teaching certificates.
These updates aim to improve transparency, support effective oversight, and ensure consistent professional standards across the education system.

Residents are invited to review the proposed amendments and share their feedback. Submit your feedback to educationoperations@gov.nt.ca by August 16, 2026. All feedback will be reviewed and considered before the regulations are finalized.
Next Steps
Following the engagement period, GNWT will review all feedback received. A What We Heard Report will be published summarizing input. Final regulatory amendments will be considered for approval and implementation alongside other regulatory updates required to bring legislative amendments into force.
