Residents and stakeholders were invited to provide feedback on the proposed Tobacco and Vapour Products Control Regulations.
Over 100 responses to the online survey and over 50 written responses were received. Feedback was exceptionally supportive of banning flavoured vapour products.
Forty-seven submissions were received in total with over 60% of those in support of banning the sale of flavoured vaping products. Of the 47 submissions, 33 were received from NWT residents while the remaining 14 were from other jurisdictions.
Submissions were received from two vaping realtors in the NWT, three vaping realtors from outside the NWT, the Canadian Cancer Society, and Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada.
To keep vapour products out of the hands of children and youth, the Department of Health Social Services proposed to build on the protections provided under the Act by developing regulations or regulatory amendments that will limit the sale of flavoured vapour products.
The Act aims to protect residents’ health by regulating where and how vaping products can be accessed, and placing restrictions on the display and advertising of vaping products in the NWT, anywhere children and youth have access.
