Budget Dialogues 2026

Introduction

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is preparing its next budget for 2027-2028. We want your input to help guide decisions about programs, services, and investments that matter to you and your community.

Government borrowing and debt

The GNWT is balancing its day‑to‑day operating budget, but overall debt is expected to increase as borrowing is used to invest in infrastructure and long‑term priorities. While borrowing can support important projects and services, it may also reduce flexibility for future spending decisions.

1.

How concerned are you about the GNWT running a deficit and taking on more debt?

Investments: Priority areas for spending

The GNWT must make careful choices about how it uses public funds.

The 20th Legislative Assembly’s priorities are:

  • housing,
  • economy
  • access to health care
  • addressing the effects of trauma
  • safe residents and communities.
2.
