Overview
In 2019, the GNWT engaged communities on the development of the Sustainable Livelihoods Action Plan.
Harvesting and trapping have always been important to people and communities in the NWT.
ENR’s Community Harvesters Assistance Program (CHAP) and Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur Program (GMVF) support harvesting and trapping activities across the NWT.
We held open houses in 18 communities, regional meetings, a public survey, and a youth photo contest.
We heard from communities that CHAP and GMVF are very important, well-liked programs. We also heard there are areas of the programs that could be improved to make them even better. Evaluating CHAP and GMVF is identified as an action item in the ENR Sustainable Livelihoods Action Plan.
Results
This What We Heard report outlines the feedback we received on how CHAP is working, where there are challenges, and where the program could be improved to better serve Indigenous NWT harvesters. The report also provides concrete actions ENR will be taking over the next six months to refresh the program.
Next Steps
- Winter 2022: the GNWT will seek feedback on the report from IGOs, renewable resource boards and councils, hunters and trappers committees and the public, while starting work on the actions identified.
- Summer 2022: Release the final evaluation report, updated program policy and new guidelines.
