This engagement was completed.
Overview
A human health risk assessment (HHRA) was carried out for areas that are offsite but near to the former Giant Mine, primarily to the west and northwest of the mine site, and other areas that have been impacted by historical mining.
This study looked at whether people are being exposed to chemicals at levels of concern, specifically arsenic, and their level of risk.
Canada North Environmental Services Ltd. (CanNorth) conducted this assessment on behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC).
Results
The GNWT, Government of Canada, and CanNorth held a public engagement session (presentation downloads) to talk about ongoing risk assessment work on legacy arsenic contamination on May 10, 2018.
Next Steps
An analysis of available data was limited on fish from inland lakes around Yellowknife.
The study sought fish samples from the following lakes:
Walsh
Banting
Prosperous
Prelude
River
Pontoon
Landing
Madeline
Ryan
The program also accepted samples from other local lakes, except Great Slave Lake. Samples were collected until August 10, 2018.
