Overview
The Northwest Territories (NWT) Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (JK-12) curriculum is out of date and in need of renewal.
In 2021, ECE undertook an engagement and consultation process to hear from various educational partners across the NWT about their concerns, ideas and questions around NWT JK-12 curriculum renewal.
In December 2021, Education, Culture and Employment Minister R.J. Simpson announced that the NWT will partner with the British Columbia Ministry of Education for the renewal of the JK-12 school curriculum. The decision was the result of extensive research, analysis, and more than 40 consultation and engagement sessions with Indigenous governments, education bodies, the Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association (NWTTA) and educators.
Background
- The GNWT regularly reviews its JK-12 school curriculum and resources to ensure they align with the NWT’s priorities and values for education. Exploring what options are available is a normal part of the reviewing and renewing curriculum.
- Historically, the NWT has had a long-standing relationship with Alberta Education in the areas of curriculum and large-scale student assessment tools. Alberta Education was in the process of changing its curricula for every subject and grade from K-12. This made significant curricular change in the NWT inevitable.
- In 2019, ECE began preliminary research to explore the curriculum of the western Canadian provinces to determine which province most aligned with 34 long-standing NWT education priorities.
- After completing the preliminary research, in 2020 ECE began a deeper exploration into the renewal of the NWT JK-12 school curriculum and curricular alignment specific to the jurisdictions of Alberta and British Columbia.
- Feedback generated from engagement and consultation sessions helped inform Minister Simpson’s decision to partner with the British Columbia Ministry of Education for the renewal of the NWT JK-12 school curriculum.
Next Steps
Implementing the new curriculum in NWT schools will be a phased-in approach over three to five years. Key education partners, including Indigenous governments, education bodies and the NWTTA, will play an active role in teacher training, adapting classroom resources and large-scale student assessment tools. Updates will be available on the ECE curriculum renewal web page.
