The Government of the Northwest Territories is proposing amendments to the Income Assistance Regulations and Income Assistance for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities Regulations under the Social Assistance Act.
The proposed amendments are intended to improve clarity and consistency in program delivery, address gaps and ensure that benefits are aligned with program objectives.
The regulations amendments will, among other things, clarify when Emergency Assistance may be provided, create a bridge benefit for 18-year-olds and a new Basic Benefit rate for temporary medical absences, and exclude certain benefits from income calculations.
Once the engagement period closes, the feedback collected will be analyzed for potential revisions of the amendments. The updated Regulations are expected to come into force on October 26, 2026.
