In the Northwest Territories (NWT), wild species that are in danger of disappearing are identified and protected under the Species at Risk (NWT) Act. The public was invited to comment on proposed listing decisions and actions for management and recovery.
LISTING
Boreal caribou and Peary caribou may be re-listed under the Act as species at risk. Both species have been listed as Threatened in the NWT since 2014. They were reassessed as Threatened in May 2022 and a 10-year extension to the current listing was accepted.
Northern mountain caribou were listed as a species of Special Concern in 2021. A draft management plan has been developed that will provide guidance on the long-term management of northern mountain caribou.
