The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is inviting Northerners to share their feedback on the draft Wek’èezhìı Boreal Caribou Range Plan.
Boreal caribou are a cultural and ecological keystone species in the Northwest Territories (NWT) and are currently listed as Threatened under both federal and territorial Species at Risk legislation. Range planning is a key requirement under federal and territorial recovery strategies. The draft Range Plan outlines a coordinated and codeveloped approach to maintaining and restoring boreal caribou habitat in the Wek’èezhìı region to support the species’ long-term.

The draft Range Plan was co-developed with Indigenous governments, Indigenous organizations, renewable resources boards and other co-management partners, and incorporates the best available Indigenous, local, and scientific information. It identifies actions to manage habitat disturbance, guide land and resource use, and monitor conditions over time, while supporting sustainable development and community priorities.
Your feedback will help shape the final Range Plan and ensure it reflects northern values, realities, and priorities.

Feedback deadline: April 8, 2026.

Feedback received through this engagement will be reviewed by the GNWT Department of Environment and Climate Change and used to refine the draft Wek’èezhìı Boreal Caribou Range Plan. Input will help ensure the final range plan is practical, effective, and reflects northern priorities. Following the review of comments, the GNWT will finalize the range plan and share the results of this engagement.
